Note that here, Freud does not suggest that dreams are to be dismissed as “irrational”—rather he gives them credit as an independent and creditable activity of the mind—free from rational constraints.

Freud, however, was not fascinated by the Surrealists—at least he did not seem to give them much recognition or attention.

The Surrealists were fascinated by three “areas” of Freud’s unconscious mind: dreams, hypnosis, and madness. Each of these areas, they felt, held certain keys to the “automatism” they sought.
